The Appalachian Center helps people know where they are and who each other are. I think of us as a rotating door for faculty, staff, students, and community members to all come together and find each other and themselves.

The Berea College Appalachian Center was founded in 1970 and led by Loyal Jones. He established an office, hired staff, created student volunteer programs, and recruited faculty for Appalachian Studies courses.

Under Dr. Chad Berry, the Appalachian Center emphasized community outreach and programs to engage local people. The Center also began to move in a more student-focused direction. In this period of the Appalachian Center’s history, there was a great deal of exciting student engagement.
